Close Encounters of the Cooper's Kind

I stepped outside our sliding doors to check the suet feeder hanging off the corner of our deck.  I had lifted the upside-down feeder to see if I needed to replace the suet or not.  I straightened up and was looking out over the yard when I noticed a larger bird sweeping in from my left.  I turned my head to look at it and realized it was a Cooper's Hawk and he was coming in fast and low.  He swung in just below eye level and only about five feet from where I was standing.  The hawk dropped in quickly and disappeared from sight as he crashed into some shrubs planted along our fence.  I watched as he loudly moved through the bushes and then flew up to roost in a neighbor's tree.  I was trying to figure out what the hawk was doing when a Fox Sparrow flushed from the same area of shrubs and flew across the yard to hide in a large lavender bush.  The Coop made at least one more swing over our yard before I had to pack up and leave for the day.  It was a very cool way to start the morning!

That is a cool way to start the day. Unfortunately for the Coops, breakfast will be served later.

I had an experience like that with a red-tailed hawk once. Except it was checking out the squirrels. It swooped low over the yard, and I could see its sharp eye as it surveyed every hiding spot in our yard. Breathtaking!
